ESTIMATING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF AGRICULTURE AT THE TERRITORIAL SCALE
WITH LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT AND SPATIALLY EXPLICIT SIMULATION MODELING

Length of contract: 14-17 months, depending on the amount of professional
experience
Desired starting month: March 2014
Location: INRA UMR SAS, Rennes, France
Monthly salary: 2310-2830 €, depending on the amount of professional
experience

ENVIRONMENT
INRA, the French National Institute for Agricultural Research, produces
scientific knowledge and works for economic and social innovation in the
areas of food, agriculture, and the environment. The INRA research unit
“Soil, Agro and hydroSystems” (UMR SAS) is dedicated to the assessment
of environmental impacts of agricultural production systems. Research on
environmental assessment at UMR SAS includes a methodological component, in
which methods of environmental assessment are developed (especially for
life cycle assessment, LCA), and a systems-analysis component, in which
agri-food systems are analyzed, to help develop sustainable systems.

ACTIVITIES
In the context of the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission,
the CANTOGETHER project (“Crops and ANimals TOGETHER”,
http://fp7cantogether.eu) aims to design and assess agricultural production
systems that combine crops and livestock at the farm and/or territorial
scale in order to render these systems sustainable. Your task will be to
model (statically, with LCA, and dynamically, with the CASIMOD’N model)
the agro-ecosystem of a territory to estimate its production and
environmental impacts under a variety of scenarios combining cropping and
livestock systems. You will coordinate and perform data collection, help
make methodological choices, apply the two methods to territories from
selected case studies, and document and interpret the results. You will
help write milestone and final reports for the project subtask and a
scientific article about the research performed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS DESIRED
Doctoral degree in hand, you have solid experience in LCA or simulation
modeling. You have good knowledge about agronomy, environmental assessment,
and computer software (e.g., simulation models, databases). You pay
attention to detail and can manage your work time to meet project
milestones and deadlines. You can work independently and in a team. You
have a working knowledge of English.
We offer a dynamic and interesting working environment in a leading
agricultural LCA team in France. Your work will be of particular interest
in the current context of concern about interactions between agriculture
and the environment, opening up attractive career prospects.

To apply: Please send a curriculum vitae and a cover letter by 26 January
2013 to Michael Corson (michael.corson at rennes.inra.fr). You also can
address questions about the position to Michael Corson.
