Postdoctoral Research Scientist
Summary Description: Applications are now invited for a postdoctoral position in agricultural modeling at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University in Palisades, NY to work on the integrations of remote sensing data, advanced climate information and crop/agro-hydrological models for crop yield predictions and climate risks assessment for informing decisions at the farm scale to the policy level. The candidate is expected to use seasonal climate forecast, remotely sensed vegetation, evapotranspiration and soil moisture to force and constrain crop simulation models in simulating crop growth during the growing season to better estimate crop yields, assess risks and risk management options. The candidate is also expected to be able to calibrate the model, derive soil hydraulic properties, management practices, among others based on remote sensing and other ancillary data.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in agricultural and biological engineering, agro-hydrology, agriculture, agro-climatology or related fields.
Desired Qualifications: Programming in a scientific language, agro-hydrological modeling, stochastic weather generators, inverse modeling, good writing skills, experience in working with seasonal climate forecasts and advanced statistical methods for model validation. Experience in using remote sensing, crop modeling and data assimilation.
The position is a full time 1-year appointment, with the opportunity of continuation contingent on performance and availability of funding.
