<div style="font-family: Calibri;">We have an opportunity for a funded PhD position at the University of Birmingham, working on modelling of the effect of ozone on crop yields with a focus on China. The student will develop a new process-based parameterisation
of ozone damage within the LPJ-GUESS ecosystem model, evaluate it for China and apply the model to quantify the production loss attributable to ozone. The overall aim is to better understand interactive effects of ozone and other environmental conditions,
and propagate this knowledge into improved mitigation measures. The student should have strong quantitative skills, ideally with some experience in programming, as well as ample enthusiasm for the topic!</div>

<div style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The project will draw on existing cross-college strengths in crop modelling, economics and food security at the University of Birmingham, and combine
these with extensive local knowledge and insight from Chinese partners. The student will have the opportunity to build strong connections in the international agricultural modelling community, along with knowledge and skills in quantitative modelling, crop
physiology and economic analysis. </span></div>

<div style="font-family: Calibri;">The funding covers an annual stipend (ca. 14500 GBP tax free) and tuition fees at the level for European Union citizens. Non-EU fees may be waived for exceptional candidates. Note that healthcare provision is automatically
included in the UK system at no extra cost.</div>
